I'm wanting to upgrade my laptop from 2gb to 3gb of ram. It currently contains 2x 1gb and i'm planning to buy an extra 2gb stick. Will it work ok with what is already installed or will I have problems as they aren't the same brand?

Cheers,
Adam

The brand shouldn't matter, but if it runs in dual channel, and they aren't matched pairs i.e. 2x1gb or 2x2gb it will run at the slowest of the two, which in your case it might run at 2gb if you upgrade to 3gb.

Not 100% sure though with laptops - hopefully someone else will know better.

It's recommending 2x2gb - but then again it would wouldn't it? Not sure if it's really worth spending £85, could put that towards a better laptop in the summer.

If you are going to do it you are best running matched pairs (2x2gb) for best performance.

Putting a 2gb beside a 1gb may not guarantee you 3gb performance.

It may cost £85 for 2 x 2gb, it may be slightly cheaper if you shop around, remember though you would have two sticks of 1gb ram that you could sell and re-coup some money from.
