Hi Guys,

I'm looking to source a lappy for my mum. She doesn't do anything more than watch movies, store a bit of music and surf so doesn't need all singing and dancing. She does want a decent screen though and cd/dvd player/writer in it. I'd imagine about 15-16". Budget no more than £450.

Any recommendations?

I would opt out for 17'' screen if it is going to be home based laptop...
(I know, we did not gave you any 17'' choices)
 
Thanks guys. All the same stuff I'm finding. I'm liking the MSI one as I've found 4gb the minimum for running Win7.

Actually that Samsung is pretty good too. Slightly less RAM but more CPU power.

Have a look at Tesco Direct.

Was looking for laptop and found a Dell Inspiron 15R, 4Gb RAM, 500Gb HD with an i5 processor for just short of £500.

A better deal than I could find anywhere else.

Oh, and they only came in pink:lol:

Still it may bring out my feminine side:gag:

I've (well, the family) has just bought this one for my brother
HP G62 £430

For general/light usage I'd be inclined to suggest this one..
HP G56 £376

Although I'm sure I've seen another version of the G62 that comes with 3GB ram & 320GB hard drive (as opposed to 4GB/500GB in the one I first suggested) for about £370, I'm sure it was on eBuyer too, but I can't seem to find it now.

Just been told she wants 17" screen now and the budget has been raised to 550 at a push.
 
Hi Dean.

That looks a good buy, but not sure why it is included in the search (someone has probably got the data wrong somewhere) as I searched for i3 and i5 based processors. It's only a pentium dual core machine, so isn't as performant as the others on that search list. It will probably do nicely though as you should be able to play full HD clips using a player like media player classic - home cinema (just google it) which will use the graphics hardware to do any decoding.
 
I know she wanted new, but I might convince her of a refurb with a 12 month warranty.
 
A lot of the stuff from Argos clearance is new, often it's stock from the old catalogue which has been superseded or just isn't in the new season book. I usually take it that, if they're selling multiple examples of an item then it'll be old stock, it's when there's only one or two of something that I'll assume that it's return/refurb.

FWIW, I got my iBook around 5 years ago as an display model from PC World, as in he took it off shelf and boxed it up for me to take away, so I'd probably be right in thinking that it'd been prodded and poked quite a bit before I got it. Although I've upgraded to a MacBook, I gave the iBook to my gf and it's all still running sweetly.
