Sent my daughters Toshiba Qosmio F50 in for warranty repair by Toshiba after just nine months, they replaced Hard Drive, Motherboard and Keyboard
Its never even left the house and been treated with respect

Came back today after nearly a month in Germany and still not right

Went with Vista Home Premium, came back with Vista Business and I can't activate it
Original product key is invalid and not sure what to do next

Appalling service/reliability for a machine that was nigh on a grand and feel really bad because it was her eighteenth birthday present

Any ideas please?

Hoping they can either give me a valid product key or a new complete copy.

Only bought it because our old Satellite has been great and never missed a beat, kid loves it when it works.

Haven't you got the original recovery disk you can bung in to save sending back?

I do have them, but worried the old hard drive may have been corrupted when they were burnt

I'm not sure what you mean by this as you said the hard-drive has been replaced.

You could send it back to them but for the sake of a few hours I'd bung your recover disk in and restore it back to the original OS.

The discs were burnt from the old hard drive and if it was faulty at the time i'm worried the recovery discs might not work

Still miffed it has come back with a different operating system and want it sorted

I'd get onto them tomorrow then. I don't think that you'll be able to get them to replace the discs as well though, but if you be pleasent with them they might, can't hurt to try.

Just can't work out why they installed the new OS and then didn't put in a valid code

Would be quite happy with the product key for the new OS, not great service is it?

Ring them up and play hell. They have installed the wrong new OS and they need to sort it by either re-installing the correct one or giving you a licence key for the new one.

Have you tried phoning Microsoft to get it activated. The reason it won't activate is there has been so many parts replaced making Microsoft think it's a totally new PC.

I would give them a try tonight, it's a freephone number.

Have you got the number please?

All I could find was an 0845 one which got me nowhere

from MS,

How to activate Windows XP by phone
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.

Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.
Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.
Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.

Note The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.
When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.

Thanks, but I have Vista and is no mention of activating by phone

Just says activate windows and when clicked on just comes up with a message that says its not valid

Just phone Toshiba as has already been stated. All they'll do is give you a code - no need to send anything back. 5 minute job. Then, you've got an upgraded laptop for your trouble :)

Quick update

Rang Toshiba and thieving *******s want 30 quid for a new recovery disc.

Apparently Microsoft no longer issue then with codes and they can't even pay for the new discs as a goodwill gesture becuase they are .uk and the discs come from .de or .eu

Really unhappy to put it mildly and they can kiss my arse if they think I would ever buy one of their products again

So judging from my ****** customer experience DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA ever

im 99.9% sure that i have a boxed vista at home. Will check & report back soon.

Point out to tosh that it is their fault and they should sort it out? If all else fails go be to the original retailer or pop down the local CAB.

I did and even more unfortunately they are the retailer, bought it from them direct

Just keep saying they only warranty the hardware and I keep repeating I bought it with an OS and expect it back with a working one

My main problem is i don't know enough about computers and not sure if I must have their recovery disc or could just load an OS bought from Amazon

Thank you, as I mentioned above, could I just load that up

Any help would be very much appreciated please

Really? Get back to tosh and press harder. If they still say no then go to CAB. The reason you can't activate is because your key is for Vista HP and you have buisness installed. Its totally their fault and they should sort it out. Have you told them the wrong OS is on there?

You could try e-mailing Toshiba and point them to this thread and tell them that unless it is fixed you intend to go on every forum you can find telling people about the crap they sell and how they treat their customers.

Then do it!

And every time you do tell Toshiba again...and again...and again!

Also e-mail their sales dept etc and tell them.

You could also send a properly printed letter to their head office here, in Germany and in Japan and tell them of your complaint and what you have done.

Keep the pressure up until they cave in totally!

Ok, cant lay me hands the boxed disc but on my lappy I have an un-used product key for
Vista Business you are more than welcome to have.

I downgraded to Xp Pro when I got mine.

That would be superb thanks very much Paul

Think you probably upgraded to XP Pro

Your probably right lol

Pm sent

Let me knopw how you get on & in the meantime, I will keep searching for the
other copy.

Received thanks, will ring my daughter and see how it goes

It worked:thumbs::):) thanks very much Paul

Will definitely pursue this with Toshiba, feel very aggrieved at being treated so badly

One last update

Thanks to the product key supplied by snoop69 all is well with the laptop again, cheers mate

Contacted the repairers in Germany who apologised for sending it back with the wrong OS and sent the Vista Home Premium recovery discs a few days later.

Stiil no word back from Toshiba who seem to think they have provided an excellent service.
Cannot make them understand that if you buy a computer with an OS and it goes wrong you should expect it back working as it was when new
How can they not be resonsible for the software if they supply it?

Anyway thanks all for you help, suggestions and ultimately the solution

Cheers
Rich

Thanks, didn't realise about the missing functions

Bit loathe to mess about now its working again though especially having such very limited computing skills.
