Laptop to flat screen TV?

I've got a Goodmans LCD TV which has a number of inputs, e.g. HDMI for the Virgin Media Box.
It also has a VGA socket and I want to use this in order to display output from my laptop, however I'm not getting any joy.
I have used the laptop with a normal projector before so I know that it works with a normal projector.

I have done the following ...

  • Connected from the laptop monitor/projector output on the laptop to the VGA socket on the TV via VGA/sVGA lead.
  • I went to Windows (7) Control Panel > Display and changed the setting to allow the use of a 2nd display device (both being viewable at the same time). From what I can tell from the information displayed, the laptop appears to see the LCD monitor.
  • I switch the TV from HDMI to PC Input (not removing the HDMI lead), but I just get a blue screen with the message 'No input from PC', (I've actually tried all AV inputs without any success).

I'm stuck at this point and would very much appreciate any help/suggestions that you folks can offer - plan on using it for a presentation on Saturday.

You need to attach the VGA from the laptop to the tv and then reboot.

When you reboot, the Windows splash screen should appear on the tv.

^ If that is the case, right click on the desktop in Windows 7 and there is an option there for screen resolution. You don't need to go all the way into settings.

There may also be a CRT/LCD (or similar) toggle on the laptop, mine is the F8 key. This allows either just the laptop screen, just an external monitor or both simultanuously.

I discovered a bent pin on one of the connectors, which didn't help!
However after straightening that out the screen would only display the laptops wallpaper - I went into the Display Settings again and switched from 'extended' to 'duplicate' (or something like that) and it now works.
Hope it works again on Saturday!

Thanks guys for taking the trouble to respond :)

When it was just showing the desktop (extended mode) it is still usable - you just need to move windows onto the second screen of your desktop.

You can drag things of the side of the desktop on your laptop and they will move on to the desktop on the TV. This is how most of use multiple monitors - e.g. having a photo displayed fullscreen on one monitor and then the close up of the area we're working on and tools palettes etc all on the other.

Useful, thanks - I'm still getting used to the multiple screen thingy on Windows 7, very useful for transferring information from a website to a form etc.
