Laptop under £600

My Dad has asked about a new laptop, his criteria are that it should cost under £600 and he wants it to last 5 years (as his current one has).

I'm going to advise he spends a bit more and gets a Mac, but I need some opinions of what to advise if he doesn't like that...

I think he'd prefer XP, but I guess that will be unsupported by MS in 5 years, so Vista would be better (if he has to learn a new OS, he'd be better getting a Mac :cuckoo:).

What are people's opinions of Samsung laptops? I've heard they make good TVs, but seem to be getting their fingers into other pies now...
 
If you are happy to search places like Ebay,Gumtree,Exchange & Mart then i
would recommend something like the Lenovo (Ibm) Thinkpad T61

I picked mine up for £500 (1 week old) & checked the serial # with Lenovo
& found it to be legit.

The reason it was for sale was due to the fact that it didnt have internal
bluetooth & a couple of other bits & bobs.

It suits my needs,is pretty quick & i have always found this brand to be reliable.
 
Thanks for that, I've found a few Lenovos, but they have only got 1.8GHz processors. I had been looking for a model with a 2GHz+ Core 2 Duo processor, I've got 2.2GHz on my Mac, that's 10 months old, so would expect something similar in a windows laptop £150 cheaper after that sort of timeframe.

How would Vista run with a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2Gb RAM?
 
My T61 is a 1.8 with 2gb of Ram & really flies along for the money.

Surf whilst burning cd/dvds etc.

It came with Vista installed but i opted to use Xp pro.

It runs Photoshop Cs2 with no probs (little slow to load but runs sweet
after loading).

3 x usb,dvd burner,wireless etc.

I also run a couple of external hard drives for picture storage with no problems.

2ghz here from the bay looks nice
