It seems that the Canon 100-400 looks the way to go for me, so should I keep my 70-200 or sell it?

Not relevant because (a) Canon don't make a 1.7x teleconverter, and (b) Canon cameras have a firmware setting which disables autofocus when the lens doesn't have a large enough aperture, but Nikons don't.

It's hardly bitching to point out you were wrong, I applaud your recognition of the facts, however, he may have a "cheap" solution to getting a longer lens by virtue of 3 of us stating a Canon 1.4 TC with his Canon zoom works just fine, following your incorrect advise he might have gone and bought an expensive lens which would have received little use despite the fact others have pointed out where else he might use it, which may or may not suit his style or type of photography.

I must remember that next time I fit my 1.4 or 2x converter (Canon) to my 70/200 F4 IS L, especially when I compare the results to my 400 5.6L (no IS), despite being "not recommended" (by whom) they seem to work rather well, they certainly represent good value for money in terms of AF and IQ. Maybe I'm just lucky, either that or the 5Dmk3 reacts better than some other cameras or manufacturers.

Mat, the 5D MKIII now has the ability like the 1D series to still autofocus up-to f8, centre focus point, hence your 70-200mm f4 works with the 2x TC. As for the OPs question about longer lenses, that's been already covered. Sports, Motorsport, wildlife, aviation etc.

As for buying a long lens, well there in lies the problem, especially due to the cost, but there are some cheaper options like the 3 lenses offered by sigma 100-400mm, 50-500mm or the 150-500mm varying from £500-1000, there's canons 100-400mm into the mix then there's a jump to the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 before handing over the big £s for the primes or canons new 200-400mm. To reduced costs you could look second hand, significant saving especially for the previous version of the prime lenses, also several versions of the sigma 120-300 and another lens gem is the sigma 100-300mm f4.

On safari I used a 70-200mm f2.8 and 300mm f2.8 with 1.4 & 2x TCs but would have loved to have a 500mm f4

I have the 100-400 & a 7D. A perfect match made in heaven. Used to use a 1.4TC with a 70-200f4L & it worked perfectly albeit a tad slow to AF.
