Hi guys,

looking to get a hilite to replace my lightstand and crossbar setup I use for my portable studios at weddings but have a couple of questions for thos that have one already

1. The vast majority of shots will be with 2-3 people max (head and shoulders) but on the odd occasion a few more jump in, how many people can you comfortably fit in from of the 6x7 and the 7x8?

2. I currently have a light behind the paper and one up top (butterfly) to light the guests, could I light the hilite from just one side with a bowens 200 light?

Any help would be great as I hate carting the massive paper background round - the hilite would make life so much easier.

I use the 7x8 and you could easily shoot 4 people shoulder to shoulder in front of it. The beauty of the highlight is that you can back people right up to it if needed without any shadows. You would get quite a lot of light fall off across it trying to light it from one side. Although you can get inside it and put the light in the middle firing upwards if you had a light stand with a small foot print. This would probably give you a more even light at head and shoulder height.

They are not very stable and if you are using it in a location with a few people about that could bash into it to tie it back to something, or use a background stand on each end whether you have lights on them or not.

Thanks for the tips, appreciate that :) Thinking the 7x8 is the answer, can get it from 1st Cameras for £329 so may have to indulge. May well have a look if I can buy another studio light as well :gag:
 
Nick, (wedding photo's) lights his with 2 430ex flashguns.
He gets great results in the same kind of conditions.

I think he fires the 430s with an STE2 but you could use any manually adjustable flashgun and fire with optical triggers.

I used a 7x6 hilite for the first time tonight. Lit with one 200 (on about 1/2 power) in at the side bounced off the back. So easy to set up and I was able to fold it away by myself on the first attempt. I used one light in front though a brolly.

I didn't try any more than 4 from waist up as that was max that I was asked for tonight. This was one I'd borrowed and having used one I definitely would like one so thinking myself about which size. Is the 8x7 much bigger in terms of carrying/folding away?
 
What's the diffference in terms of weight and ease of putting up the 7x8? I can manage the 6x7 but not sure if I should go bigger or stick with the smaller one as it might be easier to manage?

After using one last night I really want one!
 
Used a hilite at the w/e. I have the 6X7 and I used it tall rather than wide due to the location I had.

Biggest group was 4 and that was fine.

You can light it with 1 light but it's easier with 2. Also they will recycle faster so you'll have to have fewer witty remarks ready.

@ShoeQueen - putting up any of them is dead easy. Putting them down requires a knack and I don't believe the smaller is any easier than the bigger ;)

That was the size I used and I used it tall as well - not least because I wanted a photo myself (had another photographer friend helping me) with my b/f and he's 6'3"!

I used one Interfit 150 at one side and that was fine - though I wasn't using the train so didn't need light all the way down - would two be better in that case?

I got the 6x7 down by myself on the first attempt. :) (Someone had shown me a couple of weeks ago which helped!)

I think though that the smaller might be easier to manage in terms of space and being able to use in a smaller area.
