LCD changing settings view

Someone asked me today what an LCD is called where you can see the effect of changing settings on the LCD so you can see the image before you press the shutter but I couldn't think what they are called ? He was asking why you can't do it on a dslr but can on the g15/16

Turn liveview on, and make sure exposure simulation is on as well. That's what Canon calls them, other brands may use slightly different terminology.
