Well, I finally got my camera for christmas and I must say, Ive truely been bitten by the bug. I cant go anywhere without it now.

Being new to photography I had read up on everything I could get my hands on before christmas. Months and months of studying (more than I ever did for any exams in my life) and I felt I had a pretty good grasp of basic technique. However, compared to these short few days since santa delivered to me my camera, the reading was pointless. The experience of using manual has seen my photography come on leaps and bounds. It truely is the best method for learning.

I was much the same, I felt as if reading something about my camera was almost useless. I thought, if I can just go out and do what I want. Why should I spend £20 on a book that will only teach me to a skill that it holds.

If I teach myself and only learn minorities of photography from reference. Then my skill will accelerate at a pace that only I need to learn to keep up with.

Yeah and I know you will have the people saying you learn bad habits that way, but then again, who wants perfection. Sometimes the quirks can add character. Much like when I taught myself guitar.

Don't get me wrong though... I'm still the techno geek reading every single thread here for inspiration.

That's what I love about photography it can be so creative with endless ideas.

Thats the best way forward. That and talking to others / advice from people that have more experience - I know my father-in-law helped me out lots (probably more than I know) when I started out in photography, as he has years of experience and used to develop his own films etc. I was able to partly 'repay' him, when he switched to digital SLR.

I wanted to have a go at Cricket the other season, Tony (Kipax) on here gave me some very good information on how to initially set up / what to expose on etc...

If you've any questions, just ask away on here...

All the best for the new year.

Well aside from the practical learning... With the dark nights so early i will be picking all your brains on here.

After too many days partying im in such a terrible sleep cycle and have not seen daylight in 3 days. Hee hee.
