I have read that Lee filters are probably amongst the best. What would be amongst teh next best... I have some Cokin P ND grads and I have been told that they leave a colour cast and would get better results with better filters.

I have been looking at Lee filters but would cost around £300.00+

How do they compare with Hitech or Kood filters.

You can usually get rid of the cast in PP if your are shooting digital.

Is it particularly ND grads you are after? I fancy getting some reasonable ones too so watching this space.

Not easily!

If it is an ND Grad by removing the cast from the filter you will introduce the opposite in the non filtered part of the image.

What about using a mask, would that not do it? Obviously better to not get the caste in the first place though

The Koods are better than the Cokins which have a magenta cast

Straight jpeg out of camera, white balance corrected from paper before placing the filters. Cokins top, Koods bottom!

Easy to see teh magenta cast in the cokin looks like a blue cast in teh Kood ND4 (left)

Its clear from searching that Lee filters are the forums favourite.
So which are the best of the rest?

Cast on a full ND is not such a problem as a quick WB will sort it out!

Kood are okay, Hitechs are better, Lee are best.

if you want Cokin P size get Kood, if you want 100mm (Lee size) get HiTech.

Any suggested retailers?

What densities are recommended?

I think I would need 100mm for my Canon 17-40 L
I take it then that the Hitech will fit the Lee holders

I have HiTechs ND soft grads in 100mm in .3, .6, .9, 1.2 (1 stop, 2 stops, 3 stops, 4 stops).

For general landscape photography I would go for perhaps a 2 stop and a 4 stop soft grad, but that's just my choice!

Or the Lee's will fit the Hitech holder.

Might be worth looking at the prices of the holders and the adapter rings before you make your mind up as to which holder you use!

Bought my HiTech stuff from Teamwork Digital.

Thanks, quite useful. The Lee filters talk at the convention last year was brilliant but I've forgotten most of it now. They did have a brilliant filter that I wanted to buy until I got home and checked the price on the internet. It is the one that enhances autumn colours etc

Another recommendation for both Hitech filters and Teamwork Digital here, a set of 3 ND grads is 30 quid and I tend to use the soft edge ones most.
Hitech's holders are pretty good too.

Stu.

Hitech definitely better than Kood, and mine also fit the Cokin holder.

I use Hitech 85mm filters.
Got a pack of 3 ND filters (0.3, 0.6 & 0.9 - 1,2 & 3 stops) for £32 inc P&P from Formatt.co.uk

Then wen't onto ebay and got some replica Cokin P filter holders from HK to cover my 52, 58 & 67mm threads for a mere £15.

Sorted!

i recently got hitech 85s from teamwork. great service and i think lower prices than from hitech themselves
i got full set, nd grad soft, full set nd grads hard and full set of nd filters.
9 filters, and dont think i spent more than £100.
they are better than cokin.
however dont use the cokin holder. its rubbish , well mine is. a bit of a tight fit at times
was thinking of getting the hitech one, anyone any info on this?
but was also thinking of selling them all, and going for the bigger size 100s or 150s
would love lee ,but to get what i got now i would need a mortgage,

what is the difference between the 100s and 150s is it just the lenth, and if that is the case is it the hitech 100 holder that you use. so would that mean the normal nds would be 100s
and do the hitech 100 holder take lee filters and vice versa . was thinking the lee holder may be better quality
im just waiting for my 5d and 17-40 to arrive before making the decission to change
at the moment on canon cropped sensor with 85s and 10-22 i have to zoom to 14mm to avoid the holder in the frame

just been looking at the hitech 100s and lee filters on the teamwork photo web site page.
with regards to holders. does not look much difference between price, for hitech or lee ones.
if buying the lee foundation holder. how many filters will it take.
the way i read it was between 1 and 4. i know you can add another holder to the original. but will it take 4 with foundation kit
also with both hitech and lee holders you can get a front ring to take polariser screw on
but how do the 100x100 ones work. noticed that both companys do a slot in one
are they any good

ok just found answer to the 100x100 polarisers
no good if using nd grads as whole adapter as to be rotated.
whats a good (without breaking the bank) 105 mm polariser

not sure if you've got this confused but you can use the 105mm polariser with NDGrads.

the CPL screws on to the front and rotates independently of the holder
