Lee Filters

Hi,

I've been using Cokin P filters for the past couple of years but now want to upgrade to a set of Lees, although I understand that these can be difficult to source. I mainly shoot landscapes and seascapes, generally in the early morning or late afternoon, and would appreciate some advice as to a 'standard' set of filters that would cover most situations.

Hi..

You would need a filter holder to begin with and an adaptor ring for each lens for each different diameter. I started out with the Foundation Kit and a 77mm Wide Angle Adaptor Ring.

I bought a Hitech 4Stop Grad ND Soft Edge as my first (and only) filter thus far. If I was buying from the off again I would most likely buy a 0.6 (2stop) Grad ND in BOTH soft edge (landscape) and hard edge (seascape).

I guess its difficult to say explicitly what to buy, as every situation will be changing by the second

It can be a lot cheaper to buy a filter adapter for your largest lens filter size and then use step up rings for your smaller lenses.

A set of soft and hard edge 0.3/0.6/0.9 would cover most situations. If you only want to get one then a soft edge would probably suit a mixture of lanscapes and seascapes (the hard edge would be good for seascapes when you have a clear horizon line, but you should be able to get by with the soft edge to begin if you only want one set).

As said, Hitech filters (formatt.co.uk) are a good alternative to Lee if you want to save a bit. Also I find a full ND filter great for seascapes or anything involving water - the Lee Big Stopper is excellent, but Hitech also do some which are cheaper but have more of a magenta cast.

Between WEX, Morco, Dale Photographic and Hawks Photo Video (and a few other shops that I cant remember) you should be able to get most Lee stuff without too much of a wait. I've used WEX, Hawks and Morco for Lee filters and all three have been excellent

I have recently upgraded to LEE, and a worthy upgrade it is as well.

At present I have only 2 Full ND filters, and I purchased both from this chap on eBay. ND Filters are certainly a good starting point. Either full ND or grads

I am waiting for the BIG STOPPER to come from Warehouse express, but was told at time of ordering that I should expect to wait for at least 16 weeks....... Ouch..... but I aint spending nearer £150 on ebay for something that cost less than £100 at W/E .

I have heard that Hitech are a good alternative, but cannot comment on their quality.

I have been waiting on a Lee order from Warehouse Express since last Novemeber. Every time I enquire, I get the standard answer of it will be 4 to 6 weeks
