I have now received my Leica M2 and after the inital excitement of unwrapping box and admiring the build quality, i have found a dark line or debris on the rangefinder patch.

It runs from near the bottom of the patch towards the centre.

I purcahsed from ffordes in a used condition but no mention was made of debris in the rf patch.

Should i just get on and use it and not worry, or do i try and send back hoping this can be removed or rectified.

Is this acceptable for a camera of this age ?

Grateful if anyone has any thoughts on this

I'd give ffordes a ring and explain, they are very helpful and I'm sure they will sort it out for you.

The first thing is to decide if the issue is unacceptable to you, and no-one here can advise you on that. You need to clarify your own mind. Does the mark intrude on the quality or effectiveness of your usage? Will it bug you forever?

It's a camera of a certain vintage. Was it described as mint, or what?

Clarify your own mind about it, then talk to Ffordes. Have a chat with them.

i'm confused wy haven't you ranf ffordes?

Dont be confused Mr Bump :) i think i was trying to say that for a camera that is 57 years old would i expect to see a clean rf patch. The more i look at it seems like a mark as opposed to any sort of debris. i will be phoning ffordes in the morning.

If it is prism separation it will need a repair, I'd give ffordes a ring and let them assess it. Any camera of this age will need a CLA to keep it running smoothly but I would expect for a defect like this to be factored into the initial cost of the camera. M2's are fairly plentiful so if you do need to return jt there should be plenty of other options out there.

I could be wrong but if something isn't as described/ faulty isn't it also the sellers responsibility to pay for the return postage? (When buying online)

I would exchange or return it. There's plenty of really good Leicas around, alot have hardly been used.

That's the way fleabay works now...

I have spoken to ffordes today and they are happy for me to send back and get a refund, or they can also investigate further after they receive the camera back. i really appreciate all of the feedback and ideas as it is always good to here what everyone else would do. I was under no illusions that the camera had wear it is 57 years old. The question was always about whether it was acceptable given the age or was i being just too picky. Iam going to have a think over the weekend and will probably return in next week to get one iam happier with. thanks adrian

Decent result from Ffordes as would be expected. Some years ago I bought an M3 from a specialist Leica dealer in a large English city(!) only to find that several frames of the film came out blank. That dealer refused to believe there was anything wrong with the camera, and I had quite a job getting a refund on it, although they reluctantly agreed after a while.
