Yes
Im proberly going to get shot down for this.:D

But what so great about Leica camera's

I mean the Leica m8.2 cost well over £3000 & Lenses around the same.
For picture quality that in my book doesn't look any better than what a £200 D40 with a 50mm or 35mm lens can acheive.

So why do people pay silly prices for Leica is it down to "hey look im rich & your not" status

They do offer utterly superb quality in all aspects. However, like all things at the very top of the range, it is necessary to pay disproportionally more to have one and they will only be marginally better that something considerably cheaper.

I guess it often comes down to whether you have dosh to throw about and want to indulge yourself.

One of the high end Nikons or Canons would do me.

Having just used a leica compact, probably this doesn't count, but that camera was superb. Photo quality and functionality.

The Leica brand used to stand for something - superb engineering and optics.

But now it stands for lost in the digital wilderness and overbranding (of Panasonics).

Leica is currently on life support, funded by wealthy philanthropists. It can't last much longer :(

But if you want a piece of history, go for it. You don't buy a Leica because it's fantastic at taking pictures, just like to don't buy a Rolex just to tell the time.

Leica cameras mmmmmmm
Bugatti type 57 mmmmmmmm
Dunhill lighters mmmmmmm
Mont Blanc Pens mmmmmmm

some things are built with no compromises.

80 20 rule!

The first 80% makes up 20% of the price, the last 20% makes up 80% of the price. Nikon produce 80% of a camera, Leica add the last 20%.

I have a Leica M5 and a Nikon FM2n. The Nikon feels amazing, well built, etc. You'd think it was perfect until you pick up the Leica M5 and notice the extra 20%, it's completely rock solid. I feel like I could batter someone to death the M5 and take a photo, whereas I could merely render someone unconscious with the FM2n.

Besides, some people prefer using rangefinders to SLRs, it's a different way of shooting. It's hard to explain, try and find a rangefinder to have a go.
