Hey Guys,

Looking to replace my nikon's 18-55 kit lens and dont know whether to go for the Nikkor 18-105mm VR or the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM.

Anyone used either of these before? am I better to go for the wider-aperture, faster lens or the longer FL? I hear the focus is a little soft and CAs are slightly worse on the Nikkor, but it's a tad cheaper than the Sigma and gives more length.

I also have a 70-300mm VR, so not massively fussed about the extra reach.

what would you do?....

Cheers in advance!
J

I'd consider the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 - constant 2.8 and very sharp, same range as kit lens (ish) and not terribly expensive.

I did consider the Tamron lens also, but was hoping to spend under £150 if possible. They seem to be around the £250 mark...

Ah, I don't think the Sigma or 18-105 will give you much more than what you have already.

Do you have any primes? the 50mm or 35mm f1.8s are fantastic lenses for ~£150, and very rewarding to use. ..depends on what you really need though..

Oh yeah, I see it now in your sig.

Personally, I'd stick with the 18-55 until funds allowed for a better upgrade.

Fair point. the reviews I have read recons it is a bit sharper than the 18-105. the only reason i'm looking to upgrade is that the 18-55 is broken and wont change aperture. :'(
