Hello!

I am currently looking to buy a new lens for my Canon 400D body, as at the moment the lens that came with it is just no good! I am looking for a wide angled lens with in a price range of £300. I am not fussy about what manufacturer I use, as Canon seem's quite pricey! I noticed that Sigma is similar and a little cheaper. Any advice?

Thank you!

Sian

first, tell me why the lens you have is no good?

Hi Sian

How wide does it need to be?

Im assuming you have the 18-55 Non IS Kit Lens?

I am looking for a wide angle lens for a wedding shoot, the reason why the 18mm-50mm lens isn't great for me is because it crop's everything out. The lens I have looked at is a Sigma 18mm-125mm or a Sigma 18mm to 200mm. Are they any good?

Im confused....The lenses you have mentioned are all 18mm at the widest which is the same as your current lens

If you need a wide angle then something like the Sigma 10-20mm that Andy has mentioned above.

I'm sorry to confuse you, I am not at all confident or knowledgeable in the lens department! So this is why I am here, I was advised by someone at Jacobs, that those lenses were good for portraiture and outdoor event photography, and that is the only advice I have had so far, I shall look into the 10-20mm lens! Thank you :)

Hi Sian

The lower the mm number, the more you will have in the frame. 20mm is wide, 10mm is wider.

at 200mm you will have eg a head only in focus whereas before you would have a number of people in the shot with a 20mm.

So if you want more people background you need under the 18mm you have, say the 10-20mm as mentioned above.

Hope that makes sense

Al

No problem Sian, we all have to learn :)

Ive never used the lenses above but I wouldnt say they were good portrait lenses.
It depends on what type or portraits you want to take, full length, head and shoulders etc?

The Canon 50mm F1.8 would be good for portraits but has a fixed focal length (meaning you cant zoom in and out) and 50mm may be too close if you want full length shots but would be good for head and shoulders

If you wanted a zoom lens for Portraits, I would suggest either the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 or the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8

I'd agree with the lens above, and the 50mm f1.8 is not too expensive.

Basically the lower the f number the more light enters the lens, meaning you can have faster shutter speeds (which are useful for freezing motion \ avoiding blurry pictures especially if the light is not great).

It allows allows you take pictures and 'blur' out the background, so what you are taking is all in focus, and what is behind will be blurred making your point of focus stand out more. You can experiment with this on you camera using the AV mode which allows you to select different f numbers.

Good luck and have a look in the tutorials section on here.
