Hi Guys n Girls
I am thinking of upgrading my 550d to a 7d and I looking for a suitable lens for some equine photography and portraits.
My current lens is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS MkII
I have been told to look at the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II USM as this is believed to by the daddy, TBH I think it’s too expensive. From my understanding the F2.8 would be great for low light i.e. indoors, most of the shoots I have done have been outside.
I have been looking at the following lenses that are more suited to my price range.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L,
Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM
Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 DG OS
Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD

Funny you should mention the focal length, as my 55-250 has a longer focal length and that will reach about half way across the arena. I was hoping someone would mention the focal length....
 
I do a fair bit of horse shooting - mostly jumpers. I use an 70-200 on a 5D2. Very rarely drop below f/4 and always at around 1/1000th, so the non-IS f4 should be fine. And it'll be lighter as well as cheaper!

Cheers for that Jon, I was tempted by the F4, as most of my shots have been around the f5.6-f8, if I was shooting indoor I would go for the 2.8. Might check my exif info and a range of my pics to see what I have been shooting at.
 
I use the 70-300 L with my 7D there is also the tamron 70-300 4-5.6 VC but I have never used it.
 
I don't do horsy shots but do Motorsport (short oval) and also have been using the 55-250is but I found most of what I did was at or around 200(it gets a bit soft above this)
I have been told to get the F2.8 but this is way out of my price range so I'm looking at the F4 as I believe this to be good enough and more affordable , let us know what you get and how it goes :-)

I love the 55-250 is, it is serving me well. I am tempted to stick with this lens and upgrade to an all round L lens.
