Dear TP

Been fighting a losing battle with my dad over what lens to get next and he is persistent i get a 70 - 200 F4 L over a 70 - 200 F2.8 Sigma

I loved the 70 - 200 F4 two years ago and have wanted ever since, having looked around and seen the sigma it made me think otherwise.

Better lighting with the 2.8 obviously but is the image quality going to be as sharp.

I have looked around and read various reviews but i cannot decide out of the two which one is better to buy.

Im interested in portrait photography and i would like something thats going to prooduce some sharp images and not soft.

L glasses reputation is so high i almost want to go with that, but if for the same money i get the same sort of image quality and better light....well its a no brainer.

Please lend a hand as mine are tied!! :bang: :bang:

What glass do you have now? 70-200 is a bit long for portraits isn't it? I suppose at the widest end you could use it but I found with the 85mm (I know it is a bit longer than the widest on that) I couldn't stand far enough away especially at gatherings (people would jump in front of me as I was so far back) so I ended up using the 50mm or the 18-200. Is there not a more appropriate ranged lens for your chosen discipline?

Not really sure its juts i occasionaly go to airshows and bits like that and i dont mind taking shots from distance e.g. animals but i have just purchased a 17 - 40 F4 and i already have a 28 - 135 IS in the bag so i got the portrait stuff but ive seen many togs using 70 - 200 F4 for portraits also as a walk around... just me or strange it rele is out of those lenses

Thanks for help

The 70-200 at 200 is ideal for portraits, it gives a lovely compression of the background :)

I'm obviously not a Canon shooter, so I have no experience of the 70-200 F/4, but something tells me I'd rather have that than the Sigma, f/2.8 or not....

???????

he aint paying i work for my cash

he is camera fanatic 2

advice agen pls

lmao

cheers

If you work for your cash then its your choice what to get. Take his advice but don't let him browbeat you into getting what he says.

If you need the extra stop its a no brainer, if you don't then its a harder choice.

I'm not sure re the Sigma 2.8 lens, but I know the Canon F2.8L is quite a bit heavier than the F4L lens, so that may come into helping you decide if your wanting to use it as a walk about lans aswell  Might be worth seeing if a local camera shop has both in, perhaps you could try them side by side with your own camera body

Personally, I'd go for the F4

Is this the image stabilised F4 or the non stab F4?
