Lens advice please

OK - my kit lens bust today. It was quite old - came with my D200 many moons ago - and had served me well; I mourned for it a little bit before lamenting on the fact I had only taken the one lens with me today and so a whole morning in the woods was spent shooting on my Ricoh GX100.

Anyhow, I am now in the market for a new lens and am wondering what to get. My main camera is a D700 and spare is a D300 so an FX compatible lens makes sense. I currently have a 50mm prime lens, a 18-70, f2.8 and a 70-300mm filling up my kit bag. Question is... what do I look to get if indeed anything?

I have seen and heard just how good this lens is! - Even giving Canon a run for their money! The 85mm and a D700 pairing is almost enough to tempt me over to the dark side...

Curious to know is that right about a 18-70mm f2.8 :shrug:

Never used Canon before - do they give a better performance throughout the range, only at the top end, or...? (anticipates impartial reply)
