Yes
I currently have a K20D with an 18-55 kit lens, that I am fairly impressed with, but being my first DSLR I dont know any difference.

I would like to get a wide angle lens, 10-20 or something, but I was wondering if it would be best to upgrade my kit lens first of all?

I love the versatility of the 18-55, so I was thinking of going for something like..

Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM

Seems like a very good lens to me, and then maybe get a wide angle next month?

Basically i am wondering whether I would get much of an improvement upgrading my "all round lens".

If you already have 18-55 covered then why not go for 10-20 and wait to upgrade your first lens. You see the biggest improvements on lenses in the extremes so if you are shooting at say f5.6 you are not going to see a "worlds apart" difference but getting the other lens gives you more options.

It is obviously a matter of personal choice and how your finances are, but I'd suggest having at least half an idea in mind of what kind of set of lenses you might want to be sitting on after a couple of years. If you just buy one without thinking ahead you might, as I've done in the recent past, find yourself wishing you'd thought ahead and be having to sell on again. On the other hand maybe that's not something that bothers you.

I think you'd find the Sigma 17 - 70 performs better than your kit lens, but not by a huge margin.

Since you have a Pentax you may find the lens reviews (both Pentax and 3rd party) here helpful:-

Be wary if you go for the Pentax 10 - 17. Handy lens, but it gives almost 180 deg. field of view at the widest setting and, therefore, does not have a filter thread.

Im thinking of the Sigma 10-20 now, then maybe a 17-70 in a few months.

Im pretty happy with the kit lens, so ill keep it for the time being.

I have a few older pentax prime lenses that are very good, as well as a Vivitar 70-210 series 1.

So I just really would like a 10-20mm a better all round lens and maybe a fish eye!
