Lens advice.

Looking for a bit of advice. I'm currently planning on buying my first DSLR camera. I'm toying between a Canon 450D and a Nikon D5000.
I had a Canon EOS300 camera a few years ago and i still have a Sigma 70-300mm DL macro super lens that I had for it. The lens is around 10 years old.
Would this lens still be able to work with a Canon 450D?
Any help would be much appreciated..

Quick answer to your question is probably not. The lens would have to be rechipped for the autofocus to work, and not worth the money to have that done.

You do release that the nikon D5000 relies on lenses to have built in motors rather than the motor built in the body, so you'll miss out on some really nice prime lenses made by nikon. Would personally recommend 2nd hand D80 or D90 to the D40/60/3000/5000 models. Just a thought

And Sony and Pentax also have some good beginner model offerings.
 
The lens would work (including AF) BUT only wide open (lowest aperture supported at the length you will be using it, i.e. f4 at 70mm or f5.6 at 300mm) and the only way to do that would be to use it either at AV or M mode. If you try a different aperture you will get ERR99.

This would be ok for lenses that are sharp open wide (as some L lenses are) but for the Sigma 70-300 this would most surely mean soft images most of the times. Would still be ok to get you into digital photography without spending a lot in one go but you will want to change it soon thereafter.

As it seems to be able to work although only partly, this may sway me towards buying the Canon instead of the NIkon.
