I currently shoot with a sony a300 which i'm happy with but i want to buy another body either the a550 or an a700 so i dont have to keep changing lenses leaving the 300 for macro and the 550/700 for everything else.

The question is this....if i buy the a700 assuming i can source a new one i would have less cash to spend on a lens which would have been the CZ 16-80 so is there a lens of similar quality by after market providers such as tamron/sigma etc?

A550 and the Zeiss lens would be my choice. I have the A700 and it's a fabulous camera, but if you're used to the weight and handling of the A300 then the A550 is a logical choice.

Weight and handling are not an issue for me as i have no difficulty in adapting.I did take a look at the a550 and couldn't quite make my mind up.

Things i liked about the 550

Up to 7fps
Lcd display
Seemed a reasonable kit lens
Hdr

Potential niggle

Rattly flash

After weighing it up i wasn't quite sure whether the 550 was just a 300 tarted up for a saturday night out or whether it would be similar or better compared to the performance of the 700.....hence why i'm having difficulty choosing.

Watching a couple at present though i wouldnt want to go more than about £900 for the one with the 16-80.I've seen that some say the build quality of the 16-80 is a little suspect so i will drop into WE over the weekend and check it out.
Some people also say that the sony 16-105 is almost as good as the 16-80.

My sunset pictures on the exmoor meet pictures topic ( http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=221794 ) were taken with a 16-80 ZA on an A700. No post processing on those, just run through IDC with basic settings.

While it doesn't have the very solid construction of the other Zeiss lenses it seems as good as or better than sigma and tamron lenses that I've owned.

There's an a700 on dyxum for £450 ;)
