Hello everybody,

time has come to buy my first lens(except the 18/55 that came with my d3000). As I like taking portraits I already have an idea of what i want: a prime lens 50mm f/1.8, now I have been reading a lot of good reviews on this nikon lens, and I really like shallow field, ideally I would buy a f/1.4 but obviously the difference in price is quite substantial. So here's the question is it definitely worth to spend about £280.00 for a 1.4 against about £98.00 for a 1.8? or even better if anyone has suggestion about another candidate lens (maybe more versatile) just fire it up, thank you ;)
 
50mm f1.8 won't autofocus on d3000. Have u considered 35mm f1.8 instead?

briefly i have, although for some reason i thought that 50mm was more versatile (dont ask my why), i know that 1.8 wont focus on my camera, I have tried it yesterday. Does the 35mm focus automatically on d3000? is it a good lens for protraits?
 
35mm will definitely autofocus on your camera as I have used it on d40. For portraits you can't go wrong with 35mm f1.8. 50mm is also a fantastic camera but do u really want to manually focus it everytime u use it!!
 
No I am not particularly looking forward to focus manually all the time, thats why I havent bought it yet, 35mm is a good alternative and I was looking at it, although it is not cheap so if i was to go for it I might spend a bit more and buy 1.4 50mm as it autofocus as well
 
On a cropped frame DSLR the 35mm 1.8 is far more useful (IMHO). I hardly use my 50mm since getting the 35mm...
 
Very interesting point I'm going to try and get my hands on a 35mm..
 
I looked into both the 50 & 35mm, and decided that the 35mm is the more flexible option on a cropped sensor (even if it is slightly more expensive). It's next on my shopping list.
 
I bought the 35mm and am very happy with it. Jessops have for 160.
 
thank you very much all guys, think you have convinced me, i am gonna try a 35mm and i can also get a af-s for a cheaper price than 50mm
 
35mm is the only one to go for. This is what i was looking at before i went the Canon route. Still wondering if i should get a 50mm myself though

I think there's only one nikon 35mm f1.8 in market which will autofocus on D40/D3000 or any other DSLR
