Currently looking for a new zoom lens.

Looking at the following,

Sigma 70-200 2.8 hsm macro 2 non is
Canon 70-200 2.8 Non is
Canon 100-400 push pull

Any pros or cons with any of these or any that are better than others........??

Any advice welcomed

Do you have a specific need for the lens - this might help with recommendation of one from your list :)
 
No just a general all round zoom, i do alot of photography of sports, and some deer hunting so needs to be 1.4tc compatable
 
Knowing that the thought of dust petrifies you, I'd avoid the 100-400 ;)

I don't think the 100-400 will AF on your 7D with a 1.4 converter. I think only the 1D series focus on lenses where f8 is the widest aperture.

Some people cover the pins etc but out of the box I don't think that would work.

Hahaha, good one bob, big risk to take on an item if your not sure im sure you can apprecieate that lol.

Is the 100-400 that bad????

The 100-400 will AF using the Kenko 1.4, so its back to square one ;)
 
You choice would massively depend on whether you need the 2.8 aperture. If not the 100-400 has better reach, obviously. If you do it then comes down to cost and how much you want the weather sealing on the canon L glass.

Can't comment on the Kenko TC, but with the Canon one, no won't AF.

As above really, which do you need the most - 2.8 the faster and wider lens or the 400mm reach ?

The dust myth on on this lens is vastly overstated.

If you want to shoot deer, it's probably the best option out of the three you've listed.

You might also want to consider Sigma's 150-500 and 50-500 lenses.
 
I have looked at the sigma, i only want to get L glass or a sigma hsm ex lens as there the best ones to go for.......
 
Always fancied a 100-400, I know you've bought a lens now but for future ref I currently own the non I.S 70-200 2.8 and can thoroughly recommend it, very very sharp and I have no issues with not having I.S.
 
I want the non is 2.8 as well :-( couldn't have it as I couldn't find a new one :-(

I only bought mine about 18 months ago new perhaps some places might have a few left, looking at a 2005 EOS catalogue I found yesterday it shows it but as discontinued, they are supposedly a tad sharper than the I.S version but I bought it because it was loads cheaper and don't have any issue with not having I.S.
 
Would not worry about the push pull nature of the 100 - 400 you soon get used to it and in this country the issue of dust is, in my opinion, vastly overstated. I love mine to bits.
