Hi all

Could do with a bit of help. Looking at getting one of the sigma telephoto lenses (either 120-400, 150-500 or 50-500).

Can i have peoples advice, exoerience of lensed, guidance etc. Itll be a used lens looking at spending £450-500.

Lens use for airshows and wildlife.

You definitely won't get a 50-500mm for that kind of money used and you'll probably struggle with the 150-500mm as well, just checked on mpb photographic and the 150-500mm going for around £600-620, the 50-500mm old version £500, new OS version would be over £850 (its over £1000 new), although the 120-400mm probably does fall into your budget.

There the sigma 100-300mm f4 on sale there (£550) as well great little lens, sharp as a tack, fast autofocus and would take 1.4x TC without a problems, so would give you a 140-420mm f5.6 lens.

The sigma 50-500/150-500mm lenses are great for wildlife, but personally, the jury's out on their action photography capabilities (unless you have near perfect conditions), too slow at f6.3 from the action shots I've seen in the posts here.

Thr 50-500 (old) i worry about the lack of os as ill be using it hand held.

The 120-400 i worry about it being soft at the long end.

My 120-400 was tack sharp all the way through. Gutted I sold it actually. I was getting consistent handheld shots at 400mm and 1/40th with the OS. The focus isn't lightening fast, but good enough for most things
 
I've recently bought a mint 150-500 off here for £500.
It's an awesome lens, very sharp and the OS is incredible meaning hand-holding at 500mm is no problem whatsoever.
Ok, so at f5-6.3 it's by no means a fast lens but taking that into consideration, bang-for-buck I reckon you'd struggle to beat it. :cool:
 
Still trying to decide between 120-400 and the 150-500 myself, bit annoyed that WEX have just bumped the price of the 150-500 back up to £799 from £724 and I dithered too long over buying one - I'll have to wait 'till it comes back down
