Lens Advice

I have an on going problem in that I cant afford to buy a really decent lens

Ive bought a few second hand auto focus ones from fleabay but it seems I need to lock the aperture to the highest number so I can use the lens on my Nikon D70, this happens on all AF lenses with a manual aperture ring (unless the lens is fully manual) which defeats the point of buying them.

The question is will this be the same on all lenses with an aperture ring and if so what do I need to be looking at model wise ?

Locking the aperture ring at the largest number ( smallest aperture) is standard practice. You then adjust the aperture on the camera with the thumb wheel. Apart from Nikon G lenses which have no aperture ring. All D lenses do though.

Thank you Gary, so even though I have to lock the aperture ring on the lens the camera will still be able to alter it ?

That's right. If you are shooting in Aperture priority for example You set the aperture by using the thumbwheel on the camera And the camera selects the appropriate Shutterspeed depending on how bright it is and which ISO you set.
The aperture stays wide open so when you're focusing and composing the viewfinder stays nice and bright.
And then the camera stops the lens down to the appropriate aperture just as you take a picture. Then the lens opens back up again.
Voila.

Thank You Gary I didnt know that. I presumed that because the aperture ring is locked that would be the only aperture available ill have a play over the weekeend
