hi people, i have been looking at this lens:

Nikon 55-200mm AF-S DX VR Zoom f/4-56G IF-ED

its going onto a d3100.

i am going away on holiday april to africa and will be going on safari so just want a lens with a bit of reach.

i know it wont be usefull to me in low light, however im mainly looking at using it during the day in bright sunny conditions. for low light i have my trust 35mm and 50mm primes.

just wanted to know what people think of this lens, its cheap at chips compared to the pro lenses however there are not that many occasions when i would use it therefore i cant justify spending loads of money.

so just want to know what people thought of this particular lens. wanted to know if its fairly sharp enough. i know af speed wont be super fast like my primes but aslong as it doesnt take a lifetime to focus it doesnt bother me.

thanks.

Its one of the better "budget lenses" for sure. The only other options are the 70-300 VR or the 55-300. Im not sure on the 55-300, but I seem to recall it not being as good as the 55-200.

For the money it costs, its pretty good value.

I'm sure it will surpass your expectations in all areas.

The only weekness for me was quite heavy vignetting wide open. Easily solved though.

It's a super sharp, decent af speed & accuracy lens for a silly amount of money.

The 55-200 is a very nice (and cheap) zoom lens and works lovely on the d3100. Make sure you get the VR version as there is also an earlier non-vr version out there.

Here's my favourite shot from when I owned the lens on my d3100.
