Hello,

I have seen a used sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX ASPHERICAL DG DF available for £170
does this sound good/bad should i get a different one by spending more?
this is slightly different to the ones i have seen i believe it is an older variant?

if anyone can offer help or advice on this exact lens is it good/bad value or better to get another model etc it would be much appreciated

I don't know much about the variants, but I would advise to try before you buy. I've had a couple in the past and they were polar opposites in terms of sharpness wide open.
 
I'm hazarding a guess it's a sigma from the nomenclature, but I still haven't a clue what camera you're thinking of mounting it on. Half a question is always more likely to be ignored than providing full details.
 
I've update post to include body and brand of lens, I'm not sure how I omitted the lens brand but I thought there were only really 3 main ones of these to go for, of course lots of different variations.
From what I understand the macro version of this lens is good, but I don't need macro, I may yet look at the hsm version but not wanting to pay that much really.
Or the tamron equivalent

The lens you have linked is a full frame lens, I'm not sure but I think your camera is crop? Unless your going to full frame I wouldn't bother. You can get the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 which is okay for close up, none of these zooms are true macro lenses. The 18-50 f2.8 is an older lens now and has been replaced by the 17-50 f2.8. There is also the Tamron 17-50 f2.8.

For further info with Sigma lenses, when the lens has DG in it's description its designed for Full Frame and when theres DC in description it's designed for Crop. You can use the full frame lenses on crop but depending on your body you may not be able to use crop lenses on a full frame body. I'm not sure with the Canon system.
 
Also, some of these older lenses may not have a built in focus motor, so they will rely on your camera to auto focus. Otherwise it will be manual focus. Again, I'm not sure on Canon and whether your camera has an in-built motor.

Older Sigma lenses with built in motors usually have AF printed on them or box, or HSM for the newer ones.

Canons are ok regarding focus - nothing confusing between models. It's only Nikon that strips their basic models down to the bone and leave them with a different focussing system to the rest of the range.

Hi thanks for further information it is much appreciated.
Yes my current camera is crop sensor and may change in the future.
I'm aware of the dg representing it is designed for full frame however I see no reason why it would not work as dg are also compatible with crops. It's the other way around dc doesn't work on crop sensors which I believe I.e canon bought out ef-s les which only work on crops.

The 17-50 would miss the rest of the range out though, I have a sigma 70-200 2.8 I find this lens awesome, I also have a sigma 2x to get to 400 and this works well. I'm starting to shoot bands and events so need the lower end of this. I realise I could use a better camera and one I do a few test ones I'll know if this needs to be sooner rather than later. Current without expanded ISO it goes to 3200 and while the shots I took were in daylight they were useable ish from the kit lens
