Alan,

It's difficult to advise without knowing what you want to do with the future purchase....horses for courses applies here too.

(The 70-300 IS is not an L btw)

Discounting the non-L 70-300 IS leaves you with a couple of top class zooms to choose from.

The 100-400 will do the sport bit and cover some of the requirement for birding but you'll also have to add in a dose of patience...400mm is short in many environments. Portraiture isn't its thing though save for the odd distant candid.

The 70-200/2.8 IS L makes quite a decent portrait lens, will do some of the sport stuff (better with a 1.4x T/C), but will need even more patience for the budgies.

The two zooms operate on a different principal, the 100-400 is a push/pull action (a la trombone) whilst the 70-200 zooms with a rotary collar. Worth considering which method may suit you better.

Don't be afraid to buy secondhand and save 20-30% off the normal retail price.....on either of these lenses, the saving will buy you a decent macro lens for your next step (a 100/105mm macro will also double as a good portrait lens)

the used idea is ideal as i would not have to save as long
