hi, could anyone give me some advise on the CANON EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS ZOOM LENS 55-250 mm, iam a newbie with the cannon 500d with its standard 18-55lens and i bought a wide angle lens also, i feel that i need to buy a bigger lens, but would like to cover almost all bases in terms of lens to shoot, any advise would be welcome and appreciated.

What do you want to take photo's of and whats your budget?
That will determine whether the 55-250mm suitable.

As for that lens, its a budget zooms with slightly better optics and IS than the standard kit zoom lens usually bundled with the camera kits, but for abit extra money there are better lenses, but it does depend what you want to take photo's of, as its abit short for wildlife and motorsport.

I've used the 55-250mm for over a year now, mostly to photograph the cute little furry animals at Chester Zoo. If you're into wild life and you're also on a strict budget then I'd recommend it.

If, on the other hand, you can afford a little more then the 70-300mm IS USM lens is probably a better bet at around £400 or so. From the reviews I've read, the image quality is comparible to the 55-250mm but the extra reach will definately be an improvement.
