Lens AF Problems...

Evening ladies and gentlemen,

Recently I bought a secondhand sigma 70-200 2.8 off eBay for my D700. Initially it was fine and worked as you would expect it to, it's in immaculate condition both cosmetically and optically and there was nothing wrong with it as far as I could tell.

Today, out shooting the AF is being very temperamental inasmuch that upon pressing the shutter release, i don't get any response.

In the viewfinder I get the "focus point is behind subject" indicator but upon trying to recompose the shot and take it - still nothing.

I'm going to clean the contacts on both lens and body just as soon as I get some suitable spirit tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone could suggest another possible problem with the lens.

Have you tried simply removing the lens and re-fitting it a couple of times? If it's a connection problem that might clear it albeit temporarily. Also, make sure the AF/M switch on the lens - if it has one - is firmly in the AF position.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the "focus point is behind the subject" indicator?
 
The lens has been removed and refitted several times as I just wanted to check that it was the lens and not the body, the lens in question refuses to focus on subjects that my other lenses have no problem with.

The "focus point is behind the subject" indicator is a small inward pointing arrow that shows up when AF is having problems. As indicated by the number 4 in the attached link...

I'm guessing that means the lens needs some attention :thumbsdown:

Interesting feature. I'll have to read up on that a bit. I don't have a D700 and hadn't heard of it before. Thanks for the link :thumbs:

Have you had the lens and camera body calibrated. Sigma lenses seem to have alot of issues with back focusing and what you need to do is have the camera and lens calibrated at your local nikon service centre, cost wise not a great deal of £££, at the same time they might discover any other issues with the lens
 
I've taken it to a local repair place and the guy has diagnosed a small fault. The focus ring is a tiny bit bent and causing the AF to jam at the far end of the focus scale.

Not a major problem and certainly something I can work around for now.
