Lens Choice - any good - comments needed

Just getting a 450d 1st time camera.

I want to have a day-to-day lens, and a better zoom one. I take a bit of motorsport, but mostly just anything which takes my fancy on a day-to-day basis - Im too novice to have found a specialty basically.

I;m thinking of getting the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM Lens, and then also the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS

Is this a good choice basically?
 
thanks daugirdas, how does the Tamron compare to the 17-85 canon? what are the pros and cons?

Do you have an opinion of the 55-250?
 
I have to say, once more the Tamron 18-270 is a great all day lens for trying it all. :clap:

I use it's focal length as a username :help: because I used to get ribbed (until the results spoke for themselves) about the fact that I bought one because I'm not one for buying third party and it apparently looked silly in my lens line up! But for the cost, a little over £440 and it's an image stabilised lens you can't go wrong. If it's motorsport you're really after when you have explored a bit further you'll have to get fast glass and that does cost. But the 18-270 will allow you the chance to explore many focal ranges.

I call it my walker lens. Because I can just chuck it on and go for a light weight country walk! :thumbs:
 
The 17-85 IS lens is a good lens, well worth looking - depending on price. The 55-250 IS lens is a belter of a lens for the price - don't think yo'd be disappointed with it. If you can stretch your budget, the 70-300 IS lens is def worth a look. :thumbs:

anyone else on the 17-85mm? so far someone said dont get it and someone said its a great lens!

Well you can see from the shot i posted above thats its capable of producing very nice sharp shots with great colour.......I have one in classifieds section.......:thumbs:

Heres a couple taken with the 55-250mm IS.
First is taken at Albert Dock, Liverpool on an overcast day, second at The Dorset Steam Fair, dull day with rain.
For the money, I have never had a better lens. Gets my vote!
