Seeking the advice of the TP collective as I start to replace my stole Canon kit.
If you've seen my other thread, you'll know that I was burgled recently and all my bodies & lenses were stolen. Aaduki insurance have been amazing and I have now received a replacement 5D3, 7D2 and 70-200L f/2.8 IS II from WEX
The rest gets replaced by me when the final settlement cheque comes through this week.
This is where I have the dilemma. I could replace my kit with the exact same lenses which would be 70-300L, 25-105 f4, 17-40 f4, 50mm 1.4 and 40mm 2.8 (used or import) but at this stage that feels like it may not be the best option.
My main use is for motorsport and then on top of that I'm starting to do things like Weddings & Bar Mitzvahs etc.
I've already decided not to replace the 40mm, and that the 50mm 1.4 wil get replaced with the new STM f/1.8 model.
The dilemma is around my motorsport telephoto choice. Do I get the 70-300L again, or should I look at another option like the 400mm 5.6 prime anda 1.4x Mk III extender for the 70-200?? Do I just get the new 100-400 Mk2 and drop the primes and 17-40 from the line up altogether?
Lots or rambling and no decision, so I've narrowed it down to the following:
1) Replace my previous line up like for like
2) Go with an extender for the 70-200 2.8, add a 400mm 5.6 prime and get a used 24-70 2.8 mk1, used 17-40 f4 and the 50mm STM. The best track photos I see are always from a 5D3 and 400mm prime, so that's why this option is in there.
3) Get the 100-400 Mk2, 24-105 f4 and 50mm STM (no wide angle option)
How does a 70-200 2.8 IS Mk2 with extender compare to the 70-300L. Clearly it'll be a lot heavier but how does the image quality compare?
Would I regret not buying the 100-400 mk 2?
Hopefully that brain dump makes some sort of sense. Any advice appreciated, I can't order anything until the cheque arrives so I've got a few days. Ideally I'd like to have the new lenses in time for Silverstone British GP.
Cheers,
DC
