Lens choice for Cricket photography

Now it's the off season for outdoor cricket , I'm starting to plan for a replacement lens to go on my Canon 550D, instead of my trusty 55-250.

My budget would be around the £500 mark, but I'm not sure whether to go for a good 70-200 with 1.4x converter or something like the Sigma 120-400.

It wouldn't just be used for cricket, but general photography where appropriate.

Any thoughts and/or alternatives?

Even on a 1.6 crop camera, you need at least 400mm, so the Sigma 120-400 is your best bet

It may be worth saving up a bit longer and going for a Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM, if you can get a good second hand one within your present budget or you can get a new one from Panamoz.com for £627 including a 3 year warranty. If you decide to go for the 120-400 you can get one from the same place for £576. IMO I'd go for the 150-500 for that little bit extra reach. Got great IQ too. I've had a 150-500 on a 550d for a while and I can highly recommend it.
