Hi, Not posted on here for a while, some advice required please
We are off to Svalbard in a few weeks and will be on the Ms Explorer going around the Island.
Will also be going ashore on the zodiacs, so some walking, exploring, to see the wildlife, polar bears etc.

Now it is said that a 400mm or more lens is recommended.
I am going to hire one for the trip, so was wondering what you would recommend?

Has anybody been in this trip or one like it, just want to make sure I get the right one.
I have a 70/200, 50mm, 17/28, 24/105, so covered on those sizes.

I was thinking on these......
EF 500mm f4,
EF 400 2.8 III,
EF 100/400
EF200/400 f4 with the 1.4 ext built in.

Have used the first 3 before so your opinions will be great.

Thanks.

If weight is at a premium then also the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II almost half the weight of the 200-400 and 400 f/2.8

I guess I will have to lug it around where ever, I am aware of that, I have been looking at the weights of them all.
Good point on the 400 f4
EF 500 3190g
EF 400 f2.8 2840g
EF 100/400 2650g
EF 200/400 3620g
EF 400 f4 2100g

I have the EF 400mm F4 DO IS ii and it is very hand holdable with the 2X converter on .

I would consider the 300 f2.8 with a 1.4TC. That will give you 420 f4, but you still have the shorter length if you want it. Just an idea....

Edit, oh and a good backpack and shoulder strap.

Good idea, but a 300 2.8 weighs in at 2350g so swings and roundabouts really.

I have a good bag, having lugged a 500 around for 4 days F1 Testing ;)
