After looking at Ken Rockwells site I can say I am more confused at his choices for a D300 dream team set of lenses....

I have a D300 and I have treated myself to the 17 - 55 f2.8 dx lens which is great! I also have a 50mm f1.8 nifty fifty for low light indoor shots - candid of my lad and family snaps.

I would like a little more reach! and I have tryed my mates 70 - 200 VR F2.8 Nikkor which BTW is

My question then Is this the logical focal length to look at for my third lens -

I want it for Airshows - Motorsport - Wildlife where I need to get close without being close IYSWIM

The last question - what third party lens would be closest to the NIKKORS performance........IF ofcourse its the focal length to get?

I feel happy with that focal length - so I suppose :cuckoo: I am a little green as to what else there is that may suit.....

Cheers

200mm seems a little short for wildlife unless it's larger wildlife you are talking about, I'd say 300mm minimum for birds, seems right for the motorsport and airshows though

Any lens near that range will give you more reach, a 55-200, 70-200 or 70-300. What's your budget, the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 is a great lens and cheaper than the Nikon or Canon equivalent. The 70-200 can also be used with a teleconverter for greater reach.

I'm currently looking at the Sigma 100-300 f/4, which gives that little more reach for motorsport at some locations. Also works well with a 1.4x TC, so I hear.

It really depends on your budget.

200 is a bit short but you could add a TC.

alternatively you could look at the 300 F4 if you like a prime.

Would this work well with a 1.7X - I heard that the 2x with the Nikkor leaves the lens prone to hunting for focus:(

Sigma 100-300 f/4

Anyone have this with a D300?

My budjet is 0 right now But I will have a £1000 soon to spend - Now I may well be able to pri my mate from his 70 200 vr f2.8 for £900 but thats going to take most of my budjet - worth it:shrug:

 1.7 TC in Nikon is £260

OK after a try with the 70 200 NIKKOR today with some bird shots I am convinced that 200mm isn't long enough - ITYS:shake:

So I am really on this now - I like F2.8 lenses:'( so whats the choices - I am open to other makes other than the Nikon as ££ is an issue - so whats about to choose from?

Or what do you recommend:thumbs:

anyone have any experience with the Sigma 120-300 F2.8...........
