hope this in the correct section, mod's please move if not :)

i dont have any proper cam cleaning stuff at the moment, and was wondering what household things can be safely used for cleaning the lens on my compact? would anything along the lines of vinegar, window/glass cleaner or lemon juice be any good?

reason i ask, is that i was attempting to take some pics of my fidget butt son and he stuck his greasy finger on the lens, so now i have a smugdey finger print on it!

any ideas?

thanks
kirsty

Personally I would'nt use anything like that, others may think differently.

Some lens have coatings and if you use the wrong thing it may damage it.

Could you not use a cloth for glasses and just breath lightly on the len, similar to cleaning specs?

At LensesForHire we clean dozens of lenses per week and we're very fussy. We've tried all sorts of cleaning products, but now 95% of the time we don't use any. Here's what we do.

1. Use a Rocket Blower vigorously to remove all dust from the lens. You want to make absolutely sure you're not going to be grinding any dust or grit into the surface.

2. Breathe on the glass. Several breaths if it's greasy.

3. Polish with a CLEAN tissue. Again, you want to make absolutely sure you're not just scouring the surface, so the best thing to use is something that's guaranteed to be clean. Jessops and the like sell lens cleaning tissue, which is fine. Remove from packet, use once, throw away. We buy large boxes of industrial wipes - these things - but the principle is the same. We'd never use a lens cloth because it's all to easy for it to be harbouring dust which will get onto the lens.

i did try a very slightly damp cottonbud, but it didnt work as well as i hoped.
problem is how flippin small the lens is :bang:

i'll try your suggestion next, and will make sure i get some proper cleaning fluid soon :D

oh, and not let him touch the lens again :bonk:

crossposted, sorry.

when you say rocket blower, do you mean cans of compressed air? if so the other half uses these for computers so can get that easily :D

will give it a try, its not too bad, but making pics a bit blurred

NO!!!!

Cans of compressed air are a VERY BAD IDEA because you inevitably get a bit of propellant blasted out too. You can end up removing the dust from your lens and replacing it with sticky liquid.

This is a Rocket Blower. Available from all camera shops.

oops! :bonk:

looks like a large pipette with a larger squeezey bit  ?

will not use compressed air then

thanks!

A optical lens cleaning cloth (from the opticians for cleaning your glassess with) and some optical cleaning spray if needed,
