Lens cleaning

Hi guys,

I am due to inherit a few lenses and included are a couple of L pieces of glass, I don't know whether I'd use them or sell them and put them towards something like an 85/1.2 but either way the lenses have been left in a box in the attic for around 5 years and are full of dust/muck.

As of yet I have no idea if it is just dust outside the lens that I can clean myself or whether they've got dust inside, has anyone any idea if the dust was inside who could clean or service the lens and roughly how much it would cost? I imagine Canon do this themselves but I also imagine it costs a fair penny.

I would send them to Fixation for a service, there are other Canon authorised places, but I haven't used them so not confident of recommending them.

If they've been in a box for five years then, depending on how damp it got, my main worry would be fungus.

I'd agree that it'd be best to get them professionally looked at and serviced.

Say it's a worst scenario, dust, muck and fungus in the lenses, are they repairable/serviceable?

i dont know specifics, ive never had it done, but having anything services professionally thats delicate is expensive, and adding the WORD 'photography' seems to double the price of most things, unfortunatly

well, id suggest at least getting a quote first - you never know, after all

and it might be its just external dust, in which case you could quite easily clean them yourself

I hope so, I know he's got a Canon 80-200mm f:2.8L and a Canon 20-35mm 1:2.8L as well as a few others and two 35mm bodies. May well keep the 20-35

I've used them a few times in the past, but can't remember the costs, give them a call and ask for a rough estimate.
