Lens comparison Nikkor 70-300 Vs. 55-300

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have been searching for info on the 55-300 and 70-300 and this one came up and has lots of useful info.
I would also like to upgrade my Tamron 70-300 for similar reasons (poor IQ, slow autofocus etc) and would like to get one of these lenses. In perfect world, I would go for the 70-300 but am not sure my budget would stretch that far, am also worried about the weight of it on my puny little arms
Before I start the saving up, I just want to ask if the 55-300 (and 70-300) compatible with my trusty D50??

I know you've had the answer from Flash in the pan that the 70-300 is compatible with the D50, but I just thought I would say that I use one on my D50 and it balances great apart from being sharp as a tack. I suppose as you can get a new 55-300 for the same price as a used 70-300, it could be tempting to go for the former, but I'm glad I didn't now.

Just out of interest, anyone know how much I could hope to get for my Tamron 70-300 DI LD if I were to try selling it on? (if anything!!)
I moved from the Tamron to a 70-300 VR earlier this year. Difference is night and day. I didn't really consider the 55-300 for too long because, to me at least, it didn't sound like it was going to be a huge leap up from the Tamron.
I'm very pleased with 70-300. Super sharp up to 200mm or so and although it gets softer from there, it is still leagues ahead of the Tamron at the longer end. Big thumbs up from me.
I think I got around £80 selling the Tamron on here.

Having upgraded now to 70-300 Nikkor, must agree with Graham..the difference is night and day
