O.K. I took 2 pictures today both the same focal distance with the same settings with 2 different lenses (not telling you which ones yet :D) same camera body, taken indoors no flash

I would like your opinions on both pictures please, sorry not very interesting piccys just a cereal box wanted to experiment:lol:

C & C please at to which is the best and why.

and yes I do eat Pufffed Wheat I like it :lol:

Thank you.

1st is better for me as it is correctly exposed and sharper (a tad).
The second looks a litle soft and is underexposed.
Is that what you wanted?

Hmm... interesting... apart from the slightly different crop.. the longer focal length appears to be slightly further away... the second seems a lot sharper, but a little dimmer.... Of the two, I'd take the second shot as my fave...

Was that shot with a macro lens ?

Its not a crop, it's two different lenses!

No not macro, no PP done at all not even a crop, they are as as they came out the camera.

First is better exposed but has a much shallower depth of field than the second. The second looks a little sharper on the smaller lettering on the cereal box.

No argument from me on that one Baz.. maybe crop is the wrong word... framing would be better...

I think we are all looking at different areas of both pics!

The first one is brighter as you can obviously see, the second is better focussed, and would appear to have a better depth of field. Unless the top one is not focussing properly, and only just caught the front of the cereal box in its focus plane, then I can't see how these were done at the same settings. It doesn't explain why the ruler is OOF on the first, and not in the second, unless like I say the second lens is focussing slightly differently (better?)

Hope that makes sense.

#2 for me, the writing on the ruler is so much sharper.

Nicki... I hope you don't mind... further thoughts...

the second lens has a closer focus distance than the first, so the image seems tighter in the frame... the ruler on the right is against the rhs, the box isn't showing the edge on the LHS etc. The overall image in the second shot, is darker, despite identical exposure settings, so possibly again indicating closer to the subject, than the first, I can't work out what else it might be. The second image is much sharper than the first, looking at the markings on the ruler, the definition in the text and images on the box. Possibly even a larger depth of field at the same aperture setting, given the extra text in the shadow area between the box and the ruler.

The darker image in the second would be easier to correct than the not so sharp text in the first... thus my choice of second.

It does'nt say that both lenese are the same!

The reason for me asking was that I was starting to doubt my Sigma lens as having a problem focussing with it, but this proves me wrong as most of you have gone for the second shot which is the Sigma and looking back at the focal length in the original it is 198 mm and the tamron lens (which is the other one was 180mm)

2nd one looks sharper to me, especially if you look in the bottom right corner - the markings on the ruler are way sharper. The first picture seems better exposed though.

Were the settings actually the same or were you fibbing? I'm not convinced as the DOF is different on both.

No I am being honest here as I was starting to doubt my eyesight in a big way so carried out this experiemnt (with the help of a kind person on here) and the only difference I can see from the originals is that the 2nd shot was taken from a slightly longer focal length as I could not gert it spot on so had to guestimate slightly.

If you look in the wild and free thread under Pansy and dog these were taken with the sigma also and one is OOF and the other one is o.k. (well to my eyes, but that's not counting for much :lol:)

Settings were for both 1/200 ISO 800 F 5.6 shot on AV no flash used only electric light and daylight from the window.

Would the small amount of length difference of 180mm to 198 mm make a vast difference?

Second one is sharper. What was the aperture and shutter speed for each, and were they on a tripod?

Also if anyone is in the area and would like to have a go with the Sigma, if it will fit on your camera, you are more than welcome I would be interested to know what you thought!

Prefer the colour rendition of 1 but 2 is sharper and (as said already) has a deeper dof for some reason.

Make it P.M. and will give me a chance to get a few things done, roughly what time? and then I can see what the weather is going to do.
