im looking at the nikon 28-300mm vr also the sigma 120-300mm 2.8 os
im looking for information to help me pick the one with the best IQ
any info would be very helpful

hmm, well, they're designed for different things.

The 28-300 is a superzoom for a full frame body and the 120-300 is a big zoom lens with constant f/2.8 aperture.

I guess it depends on what you want to do with it.
 
iv got the 18-200vr just now but would like a bit more zoom at the long end
2.8 is good for low light but i dont want to compromise quality if that makes sense
so what gives the best IQ pictures ?
 
Compared to 200mm, 300mm really isn't that much more and IMHO it isn't worth spending any cash unless the new lens will do something that the old won't i.e. it has f/2.8 aperture so is better for lower light. Of course, you could add a TC to the 120-300.

Still, unless you need the low light performance I don't see any point in you buying either lens mentioned, 200 to 300mm just for length isn't worth spending that much money on.
 
I don't think that's a very sensible question you're asking, I'm afraid.

The 18-200 you have is a walkaround lens. The 28-300 is also a walkaround lens. But the 120-300 is a massive heavy lump that needs serious time in the gym and/or a monopod to get the best out of it. Chalk and cheese.

If you want the best possible image quality at 300mm, get a 300mm f/2.8 or f/4 prime. But if that's not what you really want - and I suspect it isn't - then you're going to have to define your requirements a bit more precisely.

So why are you looking at another compromised superzoom lens? If you want low light performance and the best optical clarity then your set up should be 17-55 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 and either compromise with a TC for extra reach now and again or buy a 300 f2.8.
 
200-300mm isn't enough of a reach to justify buying a new lens for IMO. Why don't you get a decent TC or have a look at maybe the sigma 50-500mm OS or 150-500 OS?

What's your budget and what do you need a new lens for?
 
thanks for the feedback guys , i want another compomised lens with better low light capabilities with the best IQ offered.
if i was wanting 2.8 or f4 primes i would have asked the relvent questions abour them.
im looking for the best zoom lens with best IQ

All superzooms are f/5.6 at the long end so won't offer anything over your current lens for low light.

So, the 120-300 it is.
