lens compatibility

Hello to everyone
A quick introduction: I have been on this forum for a little while now taking in bits of useful information here and there. i own a nikon d70s with a kit lens(18-70 3.5-4.5) and am now thinking of buying a few prime lenses to take my photography further.
my question is how do i know what prime lenses will work on my camera and by 'work' i mean have all or most of the functions remain.
I am looking at some older primes that are pre af-s

any help?
