My MIL has a Canon 1000f SLR camera with two Sigma lenses, a 70-210mm saf and a 35 - 80mm saf

My question is are these lenses compatible with my 400d slr ? They do fit ok and the auto focus works but is this ok? Will using these older lenses harm my camera?

I have asked my OH for a 55-250 canon for Xmas but we could really do without the expense and my MIL could use my camera too using her lenses.
 
If they work on your camera, they'll work just fine. Alot of people use older lenses on newer cameras just for the effect/practicality!

The only difference between using older lenses against newer ones, is most of it is manual. You will have to focus yourself and, depending on the lens, do the aperture as well. It can be quite fun at times, but it's rather irritating if you want to use the lens as a daily.

In short, it will do your camera no harm at all :)
 
Thanks very much for your reply, they do have auto focus which is working. The only odd thing is that normally I zoom using my hand and it doesn't seem possible to do this with the 70-210 one. I assumed it was prime but it can't be if it's 70-210! I hope that makes sense!
 
No idea! Probably, how can I check? I did try pulling but didn't want to break it!

Hurrah it is indeed a push pull, was being too soft but yes it does pull out! Woo hoo

Out of interest Canon made a 70-210mm f4 push/pull. If ever you get the chance to pick one up cheap do so (got one for £70). The optics are fantastic, just a little slow on the autofocus compared with modern lenses. Never tried the Sigma, but I hope you enjoy it!

Hmm after trying the longer lens today it's throwing up an err99 message - it is ok when I've got it fully zoomed though. Also flash is coming on in tv and av modes which is really annoying! How do I turn the flash off?
 
isn't it when using older lens, i.e manual lenses you can only use in Manual mode or maybe Aperture mode. P and S mode won't work.

Personally i won't use older zoom lens because zooming and focus at the same time can be pain during daily shots but manual focus prime lens is fun and it can improve your focus skill as well.
 
Yes you are right! It is working in manual and auto only. Wish I knew how to turn off flash when in auto though!
 
Older Sigma lenses usually give errors on Canon DSLRs, whenever they are used at an aperture above maximum. E.g. If the lens is f4.5-5.6, then you can't use any aperture other than f4.5 at the wide end or f5.6 at the long end. Trying to change it will give you an error when you take the shot.
