Lens creak/crunch when searching for focus lock

I've just picked up an Tamron 18-250 lens from eBay.
Happy with the lens. All appears to work well and managed to get some pretty good snaps.
However, there is one annoying issue. It doesn't appear to effect performance but is still annoying.
It happens when the lens is searching for focus lock. If the lens doesn't find focus lock then the focus ring continues turning until it reaches the limit. When it reaches this limit point there is a crunch/creak noise, before the focus ring starts turning in the opposite direction.
It's like the focus ring keeps trying to rotate further than it is allowed to.
Is this normal or do you think there is a problem?

Another question whilst I'm here relates to my memory card. I previously had a 4gb memory card. It was an old one but worked fine. Was fast enough and i never had to wait for the camera to read the card. I just bought a Kingston 266x 16gb card. It works ok, but there are times when i am waiting for 10-15 secs whilst the camera is either reading or writing to the card. Is this normal? Could the card be faulty? Is it just slower because it is bigger than my 4gb one?
