My problem could be solved in that I am making a really newby mistake when taking my photos. But when I shoot with my 70-200 at 200 it doesn't seem very sharp especially when i add the 1.4x Converter on it.

I took some pics of some Windsurfers today and the pics at full 200mm with the focus being on the person on the windsurt board, it doesn't seem like its sharp or there is much detail is this me being a retard or would i get a sharper pic with a 200 f2.8, would probably keep my 70-200 as i like the zoom although I can't say i use it much at anything other then 200.

What do you think? I'll get some pics up once they finish uploading.

What aperture are you using for the shots?

PS........Converters ain`t great.

Most of the time I shoot at around f9-11 ISO either 100 or 200 and shutter well over 1/500.

This is more then 800 wide so i'll link it

WindSurfer

The exif should be in tact, that is at 280mm with the 1.4x Extender, is it that I am not shooting at a high enough Fstop ??

Perhaps a little too high. f/8 or so will be sharpest, f/11 will be a little bit softer. Look up the "diffraction limit".

It could well be your workflow. Are you shooting RAW or JPEG? Do you do any sharpening?

Could you upload a full size JPEG?

1. No EXIF in that photo.
2. Using an extender on a zoom lens, even a 70-200L, will affect the image quality.
3. We need to understand more about your workflow.

I can see the EXIF data from that one no problem.
EOS 40D, 1/1000s at f9, ISO 200, focal length 260mm, auto WB.
Not sure I can see anything wrong with it at that resolution though. It appears to be sharp from edge to edge L to R, though of course the depth of field makes the front and back out of focus. The exposure is wrong for the girl in the centre as she's darker than the water which makes up 99% of the image and so dictates the exposure, so that might affect your impression of the level of detail.

An extender will always make a difference, although the Canon ones are well matched to their telephoto primes like the 300/2.8, but less so to the zooms. Is this the Canon 1.4 TC and if so is it Mk1 or Mk2?

The EXIF is there Not sure how much more exif i can add.

My workflow consists of downlaod images straight from the CF card to a folder, import into Lightroom 2 then export as a JPEG at 100% i don't tend to do anything else in lightroom normally if need be i import sometimes into photoshop and do a few little things but that image has nothing done to it.

Its a MK2 1.4 TC with my 70-200 F2.8L Non-IS.

I'll try and find some more examples but it just seems to me they don't look to clear when I Zoom in, could be that im wanting it to better then it can be if you get me.

Are you shooting raw and converting to jpeg?

That's the best TC for that lens - you won't get any better.

Are you shooting from the beach or from a boat? If you're on a boat you may need to increase the ISO a stop to give you a bit faster shutter speed to avoid camera shake, although at 1/1000 you should be OK.

I always shoot in RAW then convert it to jpeg.
I was sitting on the beach about 150ft away maybe less.

Another example which is downloadable at full res

Looks fine to me. Only issue is that the focus appears to be on her forearm and the depth of field is very shallow. Depending on where you're looking for detail this might dissapoint you. Try looking at the detail in the grip in the top right of the image.

Do you do any sharpening? I was under the impression that if shooting in RAW additional sharpening is usually required as there is no in-camera sharpening as there is if you get JPEGs straight from the camera? Someone correct me though if I'm wrong!

Did mess up the focusing on that one a little but apart from that is ok :).

got into my head that was something wrong lol, so down to noobyness then lol.

I have had a 70-200mm F2.8 IS and currently have a 200mm F2.8. I have noticed the 200mm Prime seems better with the 2x extender but thats about it, I think the 70-200mm was just as good when used without and extender.

The only reason I got rid of it was because of the weight...

I agree, you've missed the focus on the face but there is plenty of detail in the grip. If you aren't already then sharpening the RAW file will help bring out more detail but don't over do it.

Cool, Have found the sharpening tool in lightroom :), i assumed there was already sharpening in cam. I think I am definitely going to have to spend more time developing my images rather then relaying on just plucking them from the camera.

Cheers for everyones help :).
