Lens Decisions ???????????

Hi,

Having just received a nice unexpected tax rebate, I have decided to go for a body upgrade to a 7D.
I mainly shoot wild life and sport [present lens 70-300 IS] so the lens I was looking at was a sigma 150-500 os. to give me more reach.
I have also been cosidering a 100-400 L which unfortunately has a little less reach, so having checked whether an extender would work [yes but no AF !]
I am still in a quandry.
However when checking extenders the 70-200 2.8 MK 2 does accept them and AF still works so which to go for ?????????

I was thinking of a 24-105 F4 L as another lens, but if I go for the 70-200 2.8 MK 2, would I be better going for the 24-70 F2.8 L ??????? [I do like the IS though !!!!!!!!]

This photography game is not easy. If they made a 200- 500 L [or didn't loose AF with the 100-400 plus converter] life would be easy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

How about a 300-600mm f/2.8-5.6 L IS? That's a 300L 2.8 plus extenders. A fair bit more money but is does exactly what you want. Quite a popular combo.

Or a 70-400mm f/2.8-5.6 L IS zoom? That's one way of looking at the new MkII 70-200 plus extenders. And if you think of it that way, and replacing two lenses in the process, it's a bargain. Pretty much on a par with the 100-400L at the long end.

If you can really make use of it as a 70-200 2.8, then that route makes sense. If all you really want is the long end, then the 100-400L saves a lot of money.

Before you splash out, there are quite a few difficult choices around this area, including the 300L 4 IS and 400L 5.6. All have their pros and cons. Have a look at the-digital-picture.com http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Comparison-Tools.aspx and spend a while loading up all the ISO chart comparison tests there.

Be sure to try before you buy. All very different lenses to use, and to carry.

Richard,

Thanks I am in no rush as I am working away at present, not sure I fancy a prime, sometimes I need to zoom in [show jumping] It will be probably the 100-400 or the 70-200 plus extender. The Sigma is the size I would like but I guess not as sharp as these pair?
I will check out the links, thanks again

just to throw another couple of lenses into the pot and make decisions even more difficult, have a look at the 100-300mm f4 or the 120-300mm f2.8 both take the sigma TC's and are alternatives. I can personally vouch for the 300mm f4, great lens that I used for many years, although now bought it's bigger brother the 300mm f2.8

By all accounts the 70-200mm f2.8 MKII a great lens and actually does well with the 1.4x and 2x TC's although wasn't overly impressed with that combo on my MKI version.

It depends what you want to take images of. Most of my shots are at 300mm + so the 300mm or + TC works well for me. If I require the zoom I use the 70-200

The problem I see with the 150-500 is that it's not a quick lens, soft wide open, so you'll need to stop it down, then you need the conditions.

The perfect lens would be a 100-400mm f4 to compete with Nikon 200-400mm f4 but it doesn't look like canon are ever going to release anything like this even though there's a demand for just such as lens.

Pete,
Thanks, had to laugh when I read your proverb? as I am an engineer. I've been shooting wild life with a 70-300 IS, best times are a couple of hour before sunset, so I'm loosing light and haven't got the reach so finding it difficult to get them as sharp as I like. In UK show jumping, windsurfing [long distances here] and general stuff.
Maybe I go Nikon I'll have a look!!! Cheers
