Hi all

currently shooting a lot of motocross and mountain biking, im using a D200 18-70 as i can mostly get up close but could at times do with more reach..

im thinking

55-200 VR1

55-300 VR 2

18-200 VR1

any of these going to produce a better quality image over the next one, as long as there in the same league IQ wise as the 18-70 then ill be happy as having some very good results with that at the moment..

thanks

What sort of budget are we talking about?

Because the 3 lens choices range from £130 - 500

Which would you prefer, 200mm or 300mm

ill be looking at 400 max budget so would need to be a used 18-200..

i suspect a 200 would be plenty long enough for me but niggle in the back of my mind says a 300 may come in handy if i decided to do some trackday shoots etc so not sure

i can get a new 55-200 VR1 for £99 and the 300 VR2 for about £180 and a 18-200 for around £350-400 but id go with the lens with the best IQ unless there on equal par..

Personally good lens cost money, so I would buy one closest to you top budget that you can, something like the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 (non OS) used might just squeeze in at your top budget or close.

You left out the 70-300mm VR, not so much range, but better IQ because of that reason, that's what i would go for, you can normally pick them up for around £260-£300sh, i think their may even be one in the classifieds at the moment :)

Edit, yes their is one HERE

As you have the wide end covered with the 18-70mm I would also recommend the 70-300mm vr or Tamron vc equivalent.Or spend a bit more and get the sigma 70-200mm

having a quick gander and a 70-300 VR can be had for around £270 used and a Tamron for about £300 new, are they both in the same league ? although seem to remember reading the Nikon is soft at the long end above 250mm

Both good for the money but I tried both out and walked away with the tamron..preferred the vc and also as you say found it a tad better at the long end.It also felt nicer in the hand to me.
