Lens dilema

I want to replace my kit lens with a tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
I have been Reading reviews on the newer vc version and it looks like it is not as good as the previous lens
will I notice much diference at this range without image stabilisation
all of my other lenses have the canon is feature

Some think that your minimum shutter speed should be at least your zoom length so for this lens at 50mm that'd (obviously) be 1/50 sec. I find that in some situations I can hand hold much slower than 1/50 sec and that in others I'm happier with a much higher speed than 1/50 sec.

Overall I don't think that I really miss IS when using my Tamron 17-50mm, but it's always a nice thing to have even if these days you can turn up the ISO to keep your shutter speed up.
