Lens Dilema

Hello,

I recently got a 5D MKIII body to replace my Fuji and am now looking for a lens. I was thinking 24-105mm L USM or the 24-70 MKI f/4 or maybe the f/2.8 if budget allows.

I'm wondering people's thoughts on these lenses and what would be best pound for pound?

The uses of this lenses is probably a general use walk about lens and will be used for many things from landscapes to streets photography etc until I can afford to pick up another which will likely be for wildlife such as the 100-400 MKII.

On a full frame body the 24-105 makes for a great combination.
The only downsides to these lenses is the distortion at the wide end and a tendancy to fail well before they should (it is a known fault). Mine failed at around 17,000 photographs.
I havn't used a 24-70 lens.

The 24-70 f4 also has a macro mode so if you don't need the reach of the 24-105 that would be the best option.

Canon 24-70mm f4 is the better lens and the one canon recommend for their new line of dslrs like the 5ds. Ofc the 24-105mm f4 makes a good walk about lens, but if you want ultimate quality the canon 24-70mm f2.8 II is the best. I also wouldn't write off a Tamron 24-70mm f2.8

Thanks. I've decided on the 24-105 for now. I'm familiar with it as I had it previously to when I sold everything to move to Fuji. I'd prefer the 24-70 f/2.8 II but it's out of my price range at the moment so happy to wait for that one instead of buying the MKI then having to buy the upgrade later.

The 24-105 is a great lens, especially on FF where it was designed to be used. Very sharp even side open, and the there is a perfect lens profile in LR which sorts out the distortion at the wide end.
