Lens dilemma advise wanted

When I went to the USA last year the main lens I used was the Nikon 24-120 f3.5-f5.6 VR which produced good results. Now owning the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 I can't make up my mind which would be better to take as I may well be off to Brazil later on to see my grand daughter.

The 24-120 has VR but needs more light and the 24-70 needs less light is "faster for moving subjects" but no VR

What I intend to use for is family shots and general views

Then again I have the Nikon 50mm f1.4G lens and the Tamron 90mm F2.8 which are both lighter. Suppose this is one of the problems of owning a few lenses.

Don't think taking my 70-300 lens is worth it as I really want to limit to just 2 lenses.

Think it will def. be the 24-120mm lens but still wondering about second choice.
The Sigma 70-200 is out of the question due to weight, then again I could also take the Nikon 70-300 mm lens but I didn't use it much last time.

first weight obviously, but also I shall have to include battery chargers (3) - Flashgun-Camcorder - possible tripod, that is as you say space as well.

Just a couple of considerations as anyone going abroad has to think of as well.

For example a Nikon D300 with grip, an SB900 flashgun and a 24-120 lens in weight is 6lbs (2.7Kilo) alone without the rest of the gear

Been to brasil with d300, 105mm, 50mm, 11-16mm flash (jessops)

Does weigh a bit... but worth it when you have the lens you want for the shot you want to get.


Silly q's but why take two lenses that more or less cover the same range?

Wouldn't you want to take one (which ever is sharper) and the 50mm for portraits? Or a wide to get it all in?

I did say in my original post I couldn't make up my mind which to take not that I was taking both.
However your suggestion on the wide issue maybe worth taking and would keep the weight problem down

Thank you for your suggestion as I also own a 12-24mm lens. Think I must have a bigger range of lenses than a camera shop. :cuckoo::cuckoo:

Maybe the best combo is the 12-24 lens with the 24-120 as well. Should cover most things

Its mainly a trip to meet her family (inlaws/outlaws) and friends with hopefully a few trips out somewhere, and not all to the local bars.;);)
