I have been researching this for a while now and it’s driving me nuts!! I know this is a subjective issue but any suggestions that help me get to a decision would be greatly appreciated.
I currently have a D80 with the kit lens 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 G ED and a sigma 70-300mm 4-5.6 APO DG. I have had these for a few years now and they have been fine as an introduction in the world of DSLR. However now I want to upgrade these, more to mid range than pro level (bank managers not that generous!). My dilemma is to go for either of the following (or option 3 from someone here!);
1. Nikon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR II DX
This would effectively replace both lenses with only a drop at the long end. Reviews of this lens, from the likes of Ken Rockwell, seem to very good.
2. Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX & Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED
This would give me the same range as I currently have and add VR. However the down side is a little on cost and having to change lenses more often (possibly).
I realise this is a there is not going to be a simple answer but I am hoping someone hear will make a comment that will tip me one way or the other! That or send me to the funny farm! 
Thanks in advance.
